Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is a State University with Legal Entities (PTN-BH) located at Dr. T. Mansur Street No. 9 Medan, North Sumatra. This institution began with the establishment of the Universitas Sumatera Utara Foundation on June 4, 1952, which was spearheaded by the Governor of North Sumatra. On December 31, 1951 the establishment of USU started with the preparatory committee chaired by Dr Soemarsono, consisting of Dr Ahmad Sofian, Ir Danunagoro and Mr Djaidin Purba. As a result of cooperation along with moral and material assistance from all the people of North Sumatra which included the Special Region of Aceh, on August 20, 1952, the Faculty of Medicine was successfully established on Seram Street with 27 students. Then followed, the establishment of the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge (1954), the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training (1956). and the Faculty of Agriculture (1956). On November 20, 1957, USU was inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia Ir. Soekarno and became the seventh state university in Indonesia. In 2003, USU changed its status from a State Higher Education (PTN) to a State-Owned Legal Entity (BHMN) university. Universitas Sumatera Utara has 15 faculties and one Postgraduate School, as well as 162 study programs. Currently, Universitas Sumatera Utara is ranked 13th, cluster 1 on the non-vocational higher education institutions ranking in Indonesia by the Ministry of Education and Culture's version. In 2017 USU participated for the first time in the international ranking for the Green Campus organized by UI GreenMetric. USU obtained a total score of 4,796 with the 11th ranking as a green campus in Indonesia. In the 2020 UI GreenMetrics ranking, Universitas Sumatera Utara is ranked 11th for universities in Indonesia with a total score of 5,800. In addition, USU was also ranked 15th in Indonesia according to the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2021 and 7th in Indonesia for the Scimago Institutions Rankings 2021. In Scimago assessment, in the aspect of Agricultural and Biological Science, Universitas Sumatera Utara occupied ranked 1st in Indonesia.
