Universitas Sebelas Maret is an Indonesian public university in Surakarta, Indonesia. It was officially founded on March 11, 1976. It was named Universitas Negeri Surakarta (State University of Surakarta), hence was abbreviated UNS. UNS has a saying of Mangesthi Luhur Ambangun Nagara in Old Javanese which is translated into Aspire Sublimely to Build the Country as its motto. Since established in 1976, UNS has experienced diverse development dynamic and has conducted various attempts to be a well-recognized university. Various programs, policies, and activities were performed continuously to face rapid, dynamic, interdependence, and complex global changes. UNS is one of the best universities in Indonesia and strengthens its steps towards World Class University (WCU). This is proved through various proud achievements at national and international levels. The symbol of UNS is a flower with four petals as the visualization of the nation, the name of the nation and the state. The petals at top, right, and left sides are the embodiment of tri dharma colleges. The one petal under consists of five units that symbolize the principles of Pancasila, the national ideology of Indonesia. The four petals form a line in sequence to depict the academic unity of UNS. The flower's pistil head shape is described as Wiku that derives from Pali, meaning "the learned people", a circular writing that is similar with Javanese script is Sangkala Candra, "Mangesthi Luhur Ambangun Nagara" symbolizes the Java year 1908 or 1976 AD, the founding year of UNS. UNS has been named as one of the universities in the Top 10 Universities in Indonesia, The 7th Best Green Campus in Indonesia and The 99th World's Most Sustainable University 2020 by the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.
