Based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture number 100/0/1997, dated May 9, 1997, the Polytechnic which was formerly part of Syiah Kuala University was declared independent as a State University, namely the Politeknik Negeri Lhokseumawe. Politeknik Negeri Lhokseumawe in addition to providing professional Diploma 3 education, the study period is 3 years, with the academic title of Ahli Madya (A.Md). In order to develop its mission, in 2003, specifically in the Civil Engineering department, it opened a D4 (4 years) program which is equivalent to S1 in accordance with the permission of the Director General of Higher Education number 3025/D/T/2002 dated October 28, 2002. for the Transportation Building Engineering study program, which God willing, in 2007 will graduate its first graduates with the academic title "Bachelor of Applied Science" (S.ST). In realizing higher education on a professional path facing technological developments and globalization for the 2006/2007 academic year, the Politeknik Negeri Lhokseumawe in responding to market needs that are oriented towards practice and professionalism, the Electrical Engineering department opened an Applied Bachelor program for the field of study of Industrial Instrumentation and Automation (IOI). Furthermore, in 2016, two study programs were opened, namely, Electrical Power Generation Engineering and Telecommunication Network Engineering, both of which are also Applied Bachelor's programs. With the opening of this Applied Bachelor's program, the challenges of today's globalization era will be answered, in addition to the output produced by the Lhokseumawe State Polytechnic in particular, can be absorbed by the industrial-oriented job market (practical Oriented Education) which significantly provides a positive contribution, in addition to other fields that are ready to compete in the global market.
